ALBUQUERQUE — The game plan for the St. Pius X Sartans was to slow the game down to a stall and dictate the tempo to the much-faster Coyotes.
The plan went off like clockwork. St. Pius controlled the tempo, held the Coyotes to a season low 42 points and became one of a select group to actually outrebound Roswell.
There was just one problem; the plan didn’t help St. Pius win the game.
The Coyotes (25-2) hit the bottom of the net on 14 of their 15 second-half field goal attempts and pulled away for a 42-27 win over the Sartans in the state quarterfinals at The Pit.
“(St. Pius) had a good game plan and they executed it well,” said Roswell coach Britt Cooper after the game. “We took a lot of quick shots in the first half because we were a little anxious, but after some halftime adjustments, we did a better job of going inside.”
Inside is exactly where the Coyotes went as they pounded the ball into A.J. Peralta.
