Perp gets $40 in daylight robbery

Armed robbery

Police responded to a report of armed robbery at the Snowie shaved-ice stand, 800 W. Hobbs St. According to the report, an employee told police she was robbed by a suspect around 2 p.m., Monday. The employee said the suspect had what appeared to be a knife. Cash totaling $40 was taken during the robbery.

Aggravated assault

Police responded to a report of aggravated assault in the 1500 block of West McGaffey Street. According to the report, the victim told police she was traveling west on McGaffey around 11 p.m., Tuesday, when several men began following her in their vehicle. She said the passenger in the vehicle pointed a rifle at her, but she was able to get away.

Burglaries

•Police responded to a report of burglary in the 100 block of West Mathews Street. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home by cutting a padlock on the back gate and breaking through a sliding glass door, sometime on Tuesday. Jewelry, electronics and other property valued at $8,235 were reported missing.

•Police responded to a report of burglary in the 700 block of East 18th Street. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home through an unlocked window, sometime between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Tuesday. The victim told police the house had been ransacked and reported clothing, jewelry and electronics valued at $315, missing.

Larceny

•Police responded to a report of larceny at Budget Cars and Trucks, 1505 W. Second St. According to the report, an unknown person removed two security cameras from the outside of the building, sometime between Monday and Tuesday. The cameras are valued at $700.

•Police responded to a report of larceny at Comfort Suites, 3610 N. Main St. According to the report, an unknown person removed $3,000 worth of electronics from a hotel room, sometime between Monday and Tuesday.


Dognapping

Police responded to a report of a stolen dog in the 700 block of South Kansas Avenue. According to the report, the victim told police someone removed his white poodle from the backyard, sometime between Monday and Tuesday. The dog is 1-and-a-half years old and goes by the name of Misty.

Thugs with bat attack unarmed man

Police responded to a call to the 1700 block of West First Street on Monday after neighbors noticed a man laying face down in front of his front door. The victim said he had been drinking and felt sick. He made it to his front door, when he was set upon by three men — one armed with a baseball bat. The victim was beaten and left unconscious on his doorstep with a two-inch gash in his head.

Burglary

Police were called to the 1800 block of South Washington Avenue on Monday, where a water heater had been stolen. The suspects attempted to turn off the water to the residence, but the valve stuck. They pried the door open and removed the water heater, worth $300, which resulted in one to three inches of water in the den. A television was also reported missing. Total property damage was estimated at $825.

Property damage

Police were dispatched to the 2900 block of East Franklin Street on Monday for a case of property damage. The victim’s car was shot with a pellet gun which struck the side and rear window of the vehicle, breaking the glass.

Larceny reported
Brininstool Equipment Sales, 502 E. Center Ave., in Carlsbad, called the Roswell Police Department to report the theft of a scissor lift on Friday. The lift had been rented to a national contractor, Stanley Electric, and was delivered to Walmart, 4500 N. Main St., on June 25.
Around June 30, someone from the Artesia branch of Brininstool went to pick up the lift and it was missing from the store. A series of phone calls and searches of the store have yet to reveal the location of the missing lift.
The JLG electrical lift is about 32 inches wide, 5 feet long and 6 feet tall, extending to a full height of 15 to 18 feet. The lift is valued at $6,500.
“There is no explanation for the disappearance,” said Jerry Fox, spokesman for the Brininstool. “It’s not something you can stick in your pocket and walk out of the store. We’re thinking of contacting Area 51.”

Arson
Roswell police and fire departments were dispatched to the 2300 block of North Garden Avenue on Friday for reports of a structure fire. The witness said she saw two suspects burning a “plastic bottle.” The two suspects, a 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy, were attempting to light a gas meter on fire. The blaze burned some dry vegetation and small wooden box, causing about $250 worth of damage. The two suspects were arrested for attempted arson.

Found property
An individual turned in a number of items that had been found on the 1100 block of South Main Street to the police on Friday, including 11 social security cards, two insurance cards and one New Mexico driver’s license. Guests trash rooms, nick towels

Police responded to a report of criminal damage at the Best Western El Rancho Palacio, 2205 N. Main St. According to the report, a California woman and her brother checked into separate rooms on Monday night. After the pair checked out, motel employees discovered damage and missing property in both rooms. In the woman’s room, three towels were missing and a bathtub faucet had been ripped from the wall. In her brother’s room, three towels, two hand towels, two wash cloths and a bath mat were missing. Also, a light switch plate was broken and the bathroom door was removed from the hinges.

Robbery

Police responded to a report of robbery at the Snowie snow cone stand, 2800 N. Main St. According to the report, the stand was robbed around 4:30 p.m., Monday, and $150 was taken. No further information was available.

Burglaries

•Police responded to a report of commercial burglary at Mayes Lumber, 115 S. Virginia Ave. According to the report, an unknown person entered the businesss by breaking the front door off the hinges sometime Tuesday evening. Three new air conditioning units valued at $1,340 were reported missing.

•Police responded to a report of aggravated residential burglary in the 1400 block of South Union Avenue. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home by breaking the latch on the back door sometime during the past week. Three handguns and the keys to the victim’s vehicles were among the items reported missing.

•Police responded to a report of aggravated residential burglary in the 2400 block of South Virginia Avenue. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home through a window sometime on Wednesday. A .22 caliber rifle was reported missing.

•Police responded to a report of vehicle burglary in the 1600 block of West Walnut Street. According to the report, an unknown person entered the vehicle sometime during the early morning hours on Thursday, possibly through an unlocked door. A leather purse and $40 in cash were among the items reported missing.

Stolen vehicle

Police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at La Quinta Inn and Suites, 200 E. 19th St. According to the report, an unknown person removed the white 2010 Ford Explorer from the parking lot sometime between Thursday and Friday. The vehicle is registered to a company in Tomball, Texas.

Electronics, jewelry missing after break-in

•Police were dispatched to the 1200 block of North Pecan Drive on Thursday for a burglary. Police reported that the west door of the residence had been kicked in. A Hewlett Packard Computer with monitor and keyboard, a jewelry box containing nine gold rings, one gold wedding ring, five necklaces, one bracelet and five watches was missing from the residence. Total estimated value of items was $6,100. Police also discovered that a television in the bedroom had been placed face down upon the bed. A second television in the living room had been moved and the DVD player was found on the couch.

•Police were called to a burglary on the 200 block of West Forest Drive, Thursday. The victim returned home to find the back door open. Items stolen included a Gateway desktop computer, a Sony DVD player, an IBM desktop computer, a Gateway desktop computer, Vizio 35-inch television, a Sony Playstation, an Xbox 360, a Magnavox 19-inch television and about $200 worth of food from the refrigerator. Total value of items taken was estimated at $3,380.

Vehicle theft

Witness reported two suspects in a Red Ford F-150 taking a trailer from the 1500 block of South Kentucky Avenue, Thursday. Police found the vehicle the same day and returned it to the registered owner.

Help sought

Police are still seeking information from the public about the murders of Ronald Erikson, 48, and Donald Parrish, 72. Erikson was killed on Feb. 1 and Parrish in July 2003. Although the incidents are separated by several years, police believe the two murders may be connected. Both men died of blunt force trauma after an attack described as savage, and both bodies were found along South Virginia Street. People with information are urged to call 624-6770.

3 bullets enter residence in drive-by

Police were dispatched to the 400 block of West 18th Street on Monday for a reported drive-by shooting. The victim stated that someone shot at his house after he and his brother had been “battered.” One of the family members was sitting in a recliner on the porch when a gold Dodge Intrepid 4-door drove past and shots were fired. The officer reporting to the scene noted that a projectile had pierced the west wall of the house, gone into the bedroom and through clothes hanging inside. A second bullet passed through the recliner and lodged in a wall. A third bullet was located in the wall east of the front door. The police gathered the bullets as evidence and took a shotgun they found in the recliner.

Burglary

•Police were called to Westlake Hardware, 2810 N. Main St., on Tuesday, where a Frigiking cooler and a rear-tine rototiller, total value $1,169, were reported stolen.

‘Got it!’ Teens shoot dog ‘by mistake’

Police were called to the 600 block of North Ohio Avenue on Thursday after a dog was shot in the head with a pellet gun. The dog’s owner reported that the dog was sitting on top of the swamp cooler and two teenage boys were shooting pellet guns. The owner stated he heard one of the two boys say, “got it,” before they ran away. The officer examined the dog and found a wound above the dog’s eye. The officer then went to the home of one of the suspects and discovered both boys present. The teenagers told the officer that they shot the dog by mistake. 

Attempted murder

Police were called to the 2500 block of Bent Tree Road, on Thursday, by the Roswell Fire Department after emergency services responded to a call and found an unresponsive female in a pool of blood. The boyfriend reported that he found her on the floor around 8:15 a.m. and said he may have pushed her from bed onto the floor when he was sleeping. The case was turned over to the the Criminal Investigation Division.

Intimidation

A man reported a case of intimidation to the police on Thursday. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. The victim stated a car, whose driver was known to him, pulled up next to him and indicated the victim should roll down the car window. The suspect, who is currently under investigation for burglary, told the victim to “stop talking.”

Criminal damage

Police officers filed a report of criminal damage on Friday after an incident that occurred at the corner of Ohio Avenue and First Street. Three officers were trying to subdue an intoxicated suspect. When the officers had the suspect’s arms pinned, the suspect banged his head against the hood of the patrol car denting it. Repair costs are estimated at $500.

Shots fired

Police were dispatched to 1500 block of Pecan Drive on Thursday, following reports of five shots fired. The officer discovered seven 9mm Lugar casings on the street and one spent projectile inside the house under the kitchen cabinets.

Storage unit burglary nets nothing

Police were dispatched to the city’s crushing plant, 5143 S. Sunset Ave., on Tuesday, for a reported burglary. Two storage units had been broken into, but nothing was noted missing. Cost to repair damages to the two doors is estimated at $500. 

Criminal damage

On Tuesday, the Roswell Police Department reported that one of their patrol cars had been damaged after a man rammed the side of the vehicle with his bicycle. The incident occurred on the 900 block of West Second Street. Damage to the front passenger door and right mirror is estimated at $760.

Fraud

Police were called to IRC Occupational Medicine, 311 W. Country Club Road, on Tuesday, after a man presented himself to the medical facility for drug screening and offered false identification. An employee noted that the New Mexico driver’s license did not have the appropriate holographic seal. When questioned, the suspect claimed he bought the fake driver’s license and Social Security card in Albuquerque for $700.

Embezzlement

Allied Cash Advance, 4511 N. Main St., reported a case of theft to the police on Tuesday after an employee confessed to stealing an unspecified amount of money by opening loans in the name of previous customers.

Electronics missing after break-in

Police responded to a report of commercial burglary at Cash Now, 1121 S. Main St. According to the report, an unknown person entered the building by breaking through the front door, sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday. A computer and monitor valued at $2,000 were reported missing. Damage was estimated at $1,500.

Burglaries

•Police responded to a report of burglary in the 800 block of East Fifth Street. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home by forcing open the back door, sometime on Tuesday. Several holes were discovered in the walls and about $10,000 in copper pipes were reported missing. A neighbor called the police after seeing a couple fleeing the residence in a white Chevrolet Impala. A garbage can containing some of the pipes was recovered from the backyard.

•Police responded to a report of burglary in the 900 block of West Tenth Street. According to the report, an unknown person entered the house sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday, possibly through an unlocked door. An air conditioning unit valued at $6,100 and two windows worth $400 were reported missing.

•Police responded to a report of burglary on Kelly Place. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home sometime during the past week, possibly through an unlocked door. Electronics and appliances valued at $920 were reported missing.

•Police responded to a report of burglary in the 800 block of West Summit Street. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home through an unlocked window, sometime between Wednesday and Thursday. The victim told police that her car keys went missing sometime during the night and her vehicle was also taken.

Vehicle burglary

Police responded to a report of vehicle burglary in the 600 block of South Lea Avenue. According to the report, an unknown person entered the vehicle by breaking the left front window, sometime between Monday and Wednesday. Two T-tops valued at $800 were reported missing.

Attempted B & E

Police responded to a report of attempted breaking and entering at Liberty Finance, 616 S. Main St. According to the report, an unknown person attempted to enter the building by breaking off a section of the door. Damage was estimated at $150.

Criminal damage

Police responded to a report of criminal damage in the 400 block of East Fifth Street. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home sometime during the past week. The home was discovered ransacked and holes had been kicked in the walls. Damage was estimated at $2,000.

Bogus bill found in parking lot

Someone found a torn-up counterfeit $20 bill in the UFO Museum parking lot, 114 N. Main St., which they turned in to the Roswell Police Department on Wednesday.

Fraud

Police took a report from an individual who lives in the 3000 block of Ruth Road on Thursday about a case of fraud. The victim paid $1,508.82 for the installation of a security system from Innovated Systems. The check was cashed and when the victim called with inquiries about installation, she was told, “since she wanted a different subject to install the system” she owed an additional $500. The victim asked for her money back, but has not heard from the company again. A search of Better Business Bureau database revealed no business registered in New Mexico operating under the name Innovated Systems.

Burglary

Police were called to the 1700 block of West First Street on Thursday for a reported burglary. The victim stated that he left his house for 20 minutes around 9 p.m. to take a walk. When he returned, he found his front door open. He reported an Acer Laptop, worth $700, missing.

Attempted burglary

Police were dispatched to the 1100 block of West Gayle Street on Thursday after someone broke into a residence. The female victim awoke to find a strange man in her bedroom. When she confronted him, he fled out the side door. Her son, who also lives in the house, reported hearing a strange noise around 3:30 a.m. The officer examined the property and discovered a screen had been partially removed from one of the front windows of the home.

Larceny reported

Police went to the 1200 block of South Main Street on Saturday where a jewelry maker had $600 worth of silver nugget rings taken from his car. The victim was in Walgreens trying to sell his rings when he left the building and a woman asked him for a ride. After he dropped her off, he discovered between 13 and 15 rings missing.

Shooting at or from a motor vehicle

• Police were dispatched to the 200 block of Pima Drive on Saturday following reports of shots fired. An unknown individual was seen walking south on Sycamore Avenue immediately after the sound of gunfire. The person reporting the incident stated he was driving on Sycamore when he saw the flash of a muzzle and then discovered his rear window on the driver’s side had been damaged.

• Police were called to the 2700 block of South Emerald around 2:30 a.m. also on Saturday for reported gunfire.

Cheating a machine

• Police were dispatched to Motel 6, 3307 N. Main St., on Sunday after someone damaged vending machines on second and third floors. The suspect broke into a change machine, coin box and Coke machine. Total estimated cost of damages is $445.

• Police were called to the Fina station, 3020 N. Main St., on Sunday where someone reportedly broke into vending machines, taking a grey bill holder and the coin box.

Criminal Damage

Police were called to the 1300 block of W. Fourth St., on Sunday. The victim reported that a neighbor damaged her window by shooting it with a BB gun. The victim stated that her neighbor was always shooting squirrels with a BB gun and had previously damaged the walls of her home. The neighbor admitted that he had caused the damage to the wall, but he denied being responsible for the window.  He stated he could not possibly hit the south side of her house from his porch. 

Burglary

• Police were dispatched to the 200 block of East Summit Street on Friday. The victim reported $50 in cash, 20 CDs and 50 DVDs, worth $1,300, missing. He found an unfamiliar white Jeep parked in his backyard. 

• Police were called to the 800 block of Twin Diamond Road on Sunday where two rings, one with 1 carat total weight diamonds, were reported stolen. Total estimated value of the missing items was $1,600.

Man test-fires gun, startles mom

Police took a report following an incident in the 700 block of East 23rd Street on Friday. The victim stated that friends came to his house to sell him gun. He took the gun into the laundry room to test it and fired shots into the ceiling, unaware that anyone else was at home. His mother confronted him and bloodied his lip.

Larceny

Police were dispatched to the 400 block of Chamisal Avenue on Thursday, where a woman reported that she had two mail boxes stolen in the past two weeks.

Embezzlement

The city of Roswell reported a case of embezzlement to Roswell Police Department on Thursday. A representative for the city declined to comment while the case was still under investigation.

Use of firearms

Police were called to the 900 block of Davidson Drive, on Thursday, following reports of gunfire. The suspect allegedly leaned out his window and fired shots into the air.

House, vehicle fires ruled arson

•Police and Fire departments were dispatched to the 1600 block of South Kentucky Avenue for a house fire on Saturday. Fire Department investigators determined that the cause of the fire was arson. 

•Police arrived at the 700 block of East Summit Street on Sunday after the Roswell Fire Department had been called to a vehicle fire. The victim reported hearing a loud boom and looked outside to see an older bald man running down the alley between Summit Avenue and Van Buren Street. The investigator said that an accelerant had been used, and ruled it arson. 

Shots fired

•Police answered a call on Saturday to the 400 block of South Pennsylvania Avenue after the resident found bullet holes on the driver’s side and the back of her vehicle.

Burglary

•Police were called to Bent Tree Road on Sunday for a reported burglary. A Sanyo 50-inch flatscreen television, a Toshiba Satellite laptop, and a red digital camera were taken. Total estimated value of missing items was $1,650.

Holiday burglaries abound

•Police responded to a report of a shooting at an occupied dwelling in the 2400 block of North Garden Avenue. According to the report, seven shots were fired at approximately 4 a.m., Sunday. A front door and exterior wall on the victim’s house were struck. Damage was estimated at $600.

•Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 800 block of East Fifth Street. According to the report, an unknown person fired shots at the victim’s vehicle around 9 p.m., Friday, hitting the driver’s side door and mirror. Several 9mm gun casings were found in the street near the intersection of East Fifth Street and Orchard Avenue.

•Police responded to a report of commercial burglary at the Town & Country Food Store, 2010 SE Main St. According to the report, an unknown person entered the store at about 2:30 a.m., Monday, by shattering the glass on the front door. An undetermined amount of liquor was reported missing.

•Police responded to a report of aggravated residential burglary in the 1600 block of North Elm Avenue. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home by forcing open a garage door, sometime between Wednesday and Thursday. The victims returned home to discover the house had been ransacked. Three firearms, a TV and two jewelry boxes were among the items reported missing.

•Police responded to a report of aggravated residential burglary in the 600 block of South Plains Park Drive. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home sometime between 9 and 10:30 p.m., Sunday. Firearms worth $1,400, electronics worth $350 and cash totaling $350 were reported missing.

•Police responded to a report of burglary in the 600 block of South Michigan Avenue. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home sometime between 3:30 and 6:45 p.m., Sunday, possibly through an unlocked door. A 42-inch plasma TV was among the items reported missing.

•Police responded to a report of burglary in the 800 block of West Summit Street. According to the report, an unknown person entered the home through an unlocked window, sometime between Sunday and Monday. Four flat-screen TVs valued at $1,750 were reported missing.

Larceny

Police were called to the 3000 block of North Main Street on Wednesday for the theft of copper tubing. The tubing was removed from the air conditioning unit. The victim stated that the monetary loss for the tubing was negligible, but the cost of replacement would be $150.

Burglary

• Police were dispatched to the 800 block of West Albuquerque Street on Wednesday following a burglary. A Craftsman drill set and saw, worth $300, were reported stolen.

• On Thursday, police went to the 1000 block of North Washington Avenue where a DVD player, cigarettes and Marlin rifle were reported missing. Total estimated value of items lost was $400.

2 arrested for aggravated assault

Police were dispatched to the 100 block of West Wildy Street on Thursday, where two people were arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. One of the two was also charged with armed robbery, shooting at an occupied dwelling, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, conspiracy assault to commit a violent felony and criminal damage in excess of $1,000. 

Shooting

Police were called to West Byrne Street on Thursday following a report of shots fired. Officers arrived at the scene to find several 9 mm casings on the street.

Larceny

On Thursday, police were sent to Goddard High School, 701 E. Country Club Rd., where a Book ILife Mac laptop computer disappeared sometime between June 21 and June 28. The individual reporting the loss stated that he had noticed the box open on Monday of the previous week, but did not think to check the computer until the following Monday. The estimated value of the missing computer is $800.

Shoplifting

• Police went to Home Decor, 4501 N. Main St., on Friday, for a reported shoplifting. Items taken included a ceramic frog with wings, priced at $3.99, and a turquoise cross, valued at $13.

• Police were dispatched to Sears, 1000 S. Main St., when a woman was caught by store security trying to steal $20 worth of undergarments. The management refused to press charges if the suspect agreed to pay for the items.

• Police were called to Sears, 1000 S. Main St., again on Thursday where two women were seen taking clothing. As they ran from the store, they unsuccessfully attempted to climb into a stranger’s car as she was pulling out of the parking lot.

Break-in at Valley View school

•Police responded to an alarm at Valley View Elementary School, 1400 S. Washington Ave., on Sunday. When officers arrived, they discovered a broken window on the west side of the building with several drops of blood. A juvenile was found inside the building with a cut on his hand. Nothing had been taken.

•Police were dispatched to Sonic, 1718 S. Main St., on Monday following a burglary where $25 worth of toilet paper, a chain saw, a 150-foot extension cord, a credit card machine and sensor for the grill were reported missing. Total estimated value of items taken is $775.

•Police went to the Town and Country Store, 1219 E. Second St., early Tuesday to answer an alarm. The glass in both doors had been broken and two rocks were found inside the building. Video footage revealed three Hispanic males wearing gloves, their faces covered to avoid identification. The suspects took four 18-packs of beer. One suspect vaulted behind the counter and took two packs of cigarettes.

•On Monday, police were called to 900 block of South Pennsylvania Avenue, where the victim reported that someone had gone through his bedroom drawers and his rent money was gone along with a DVD player. Total value of DVD combined with missing cash is $750. There were no signs of forced entry.

Larceny

Police were dispatched to the 500 block of South Union Avenue on Monday. The victim stated that since June 2, jewelry, worth $900, has been disappearing. 

Criminal damage

Police were dispatched to the 2300 block of North Mesa Avenue on Tuesday where someone had tagged on the back doors and fences of two different residences.
