Well-decorated and an American hero, K-9 Officer Sage seems to have the heart and soul of a human, as she follows me with her eyes. She is humble, and joyous in spite of seeing and experiencing the aftermath of Sept. 11, the devastation of hurricanes Rita and Katrina, and the war in Iraq.
She offers me a toy, a Frisbee and her paw as I sit in her chair.
Sage, as a K-9 officer with the New Mexico Corrections Department, has been used in local and statewide emergencies — working with Chaves County Sheriff, Roswell Police Department, Carlsbad Police Department and the New Mexico State Police, as well as working in Texas with the Texas Rangers.
